Martine Syms !!! Insights Design Lecture – Walker Art Center Tonight / Tuesday (3/18)

I’m totally loving everything she’s been up to lately. Really interested in the blurry lines between a lecture and a performance… can’t wait for this. It’ll be on the Walker tubes if you’re not in Minneapolis. Here’s an interview she did with poet Kevin Long that relates to tonight’s talk.

Please enjoy the time and space.

Hard copies of BULLETINS OF THE SERVING LIBRARY #6 (The Fashion Issue) and live music by JOSEPHINE FOSTER & FRIENDS (Imago on cello, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel.)

“An axis is a name for a continuum of possibilities between two extreme positions: so the axis between black and white is a scale of greys. I can illustrate this idea by applying it to the description of haircuts. Rather than only being able to say of someone’s haircut that it is, for example, masculine or feminine, we’re as likely to want to say that it’s quite masculine, or quite feminine, or unisexual–somewhere in the middle.” (Brian Eno)

All in a hemispherical room spun on its horizontal AXIS.

Above image is Chris Evans, Sketch for a serving jacket, 2013, airbrush on paper.

Sure wish I could go to this. If I could? I’d definitely wear a hemispherical skull cap.

Please enjoy the time and space.

2014 is off to a good start.  RO/LU collab with Dante Carlos.   Xerox zine exhibit through The Center for Ongoing Research & Projects…

R.S. BECKMAN / KATE BONNER / DANTE CARLOS & ROLU / MUNRO GALLOWAY / NICHOLAS GOTTLUND / JESSICA MALLIOS / KEN NURENBERG / ED STECK

The first exhibition takes the form of a half-sized photocopied booklet or “zine.” Each artist has created a page or a sequence of pages examining the intrinsic qualities of the black toner on office paper, half-sized, and stapled: the visual flattening and leveling, sequential order of pages, a small and portable size, and the ability to cheaply and easily reproduce the booklet endlessly.

Project ZXX is my humane contribution and homage to the activists, artists, and designers who have been actively fighting for our civil liberties. One such activist is Jacob Appelbaum, an independent computer security researcher and hacker, who co-developed Tor Project to keep our online activities anonymous. Tor Project’s system is structured to bounce around the distributed network of relays, which makes the accumulated metadata dysfunctional. Adam Harvey is an active New York–based artist who has a vast amount of peculiar counter-surveillance projects. Harvey’s works are vital in the way he incorporates privacy…

this makes me super happy. walker fellow SANG MUN has developed this great project.

here’s a great post he did for the walker’s design blog and here’s more at hyperallergic.

some of my behavior is changing… i’ve downloaded and am using Tor. it’s too bad all this creative energy has to be used to protect ourselves from the seemingly growing corporate state… i wish it was all being used for other, cooler and more productive things.

please enjoy the time and space.

What can you tell us about the ROLU design studio? What is the focus of your work? How important is cross-disciplinary learning and inspiration for you—it seems like music, art, performance are of equal inspiration to your work as design and architecture.

"The work is a continuation of ROLU’s ongoing study of questioning when a design begins – is it invented or discovered. The works will be presented on Angeldakis’s Universal Exhibition Walls – which act as dividers, plinths and architectural elements."
